(But will come back to read the rest of your piece.)

I'm really enjoying it so far, and even posted a couple of essays at my Inner Toob blog about its place in the larger scheme of a TV Universe:

http://toobworld.blogspot.com/2010/02/portland-expose.html

http://toobworld.blogspot.com/2010/02/brothers-in-arms.html

(With that second one, it's my theory that Callan and The Equalizer are brothers, not the same man.)

I'm sure those theories may change as I get farther into the series, and hopefully those b&w episodes, just released in the UK will soon come to America.

An interesting blog, I'll be back.....

Oh! And it's great to see my bloggin' buddy MediumRob checks in here as well!Toby O'Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06999037844031101965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36879283.post-40830584887824202662009-07-14T11:07:58.893-07:002009-07-14T11:07:58.893-07:00Callan is fantastic and is one of my favourite sho...Callan is fantastic and is one of my favourite shows ever, even if the discrepancies in characterisation between episodes written by series creator James Mitchell and other writers did become silly by the end of the fourth series (Mitchell reversed any character development the other writers had done for his episodes, the characters reverting back in the next episode). The black and white episodes with Anthony Valentine as Meres are the best, the colour ones with him second best and the Cross series is a very acceptable third.

It's worth noting that the reason that Callan hates the job so much is that he's been blackmailed into joining the Section and knows that if he ever leaves, he'll be killed - the original Armchair Theatre production that launched the show, 'A Magnum for Schneider' (featuring Peter Bowles as Meres) ends with Callan's file being given a red jacket, and the first black and white episode relates how Callan joins the Section again to avoid his fate.

I would say, however, that I think The Sandbaggers is slightly bleaker and has more of an edge, since Callan is a little more escapist than The Sandbaggers and Neil Burnside is as ruthless as Callan's Hunters and then some. But they're about as excellent as each other.Rob Buckleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12161472800655115351noreply@blogger.com
