Tradecraft: Summit Developing Female Spy Team Movie
According to Deadline, Summit Entertainment has tapped Twilight writer Melissa Rosenberg to "toughen up" an ensemble female spy script they've been developing for a long time. Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing. The project has a complex history. Deadline reports that it began life as a comedy called Blank Slate with a script by The Rock's Douglas S. Cook and David Weisberg. RED writers Erich and John Hoeber next penned a version under the title The Kiss Off. Rosenberg's mandate now is to change directions entirely, re-framing what was originally envisioned as a comedy into a gritty action movie along the lines of Salt. And it's currently untitled. There's no log line provided, only the news that the story focuses on a group of female spies. Late last year we learned that Rosenberg was working on a female-centered spy series for ABC called Clandestine. I'm not sure what's happening with that now; I know it's not in the mix as a fall pilot contender at the network, but since pilot season now basically lasts all year, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's dead. As I said then, while I know there are a lot of spy fans who will roll their eyes at Rosenberg's Twilight work, it bears remembering that her resume is actually a lot more diverse than just that franchise. Her TV credits include the short-lived spy drama The Agency as well as Dexter, The O.C. and one of my favorites, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Plus, there can never be too many female-centered spy movies!
I'm surprised that there hasn't been a female-centric spy movie already by now. Long overdue. Should be interesting...if done properly.
ReplyDeleteWell, there was Salt, but it's shocking that there aren't a lot more! I'd sure love to see Marvel give Black Widow her own spyish spinoff.
ReplyDelete"Salt" was good, but I was thinking something more along the lines of an ensemble cast. Sort of like "The Magnificent Seven" , except about female spies or more like a "Mission Impossible"-type movie.
ReplyDeleteBetween "Alias", "Nikita", "Covert Affairs" , to name a few, it seems there have been a number of lone-female spy stories, whereas a group effort hasn't been done since "Charlie's Angels". Yes, not strictly a spy story, I know.
I heard that Stallone was talking about something called "The Expendabelles". And I pictured him and Jason Statham in drag, with Heckler and Koch MP5s and eyeshadow.
A Black Widow movie would rock, though.
Oh, yes, I see what you mean. And I'm glad that it sounds like this will be delivering that. On TV there was She Spies back around 2000, but that only lasted a few seasons and, well, wasn't great. I must confess, I do love the first Charlie's Angeles movie though. I even find the second one sort of enjoyable, too.
ReplyDeleteI think the IDEA behind "The Expendabelles" is a great one... but that title HAS to change! It's horrible! Yes, I think a lot of people will picture that image you've so vividly painted if that's what they end up calling it! Also, if the plot is really what's been reported (that they need women because the only way in is to pose as high-class call girls), it sounds like it could end up taking feminism back a step rather than forward.
