Tradecraft: Let The Right One In Director Tinkers With Tailors, Soldiers And Spies
Variety reports that Tomas Alfredson, director of last year's critically lauded and by all accounts excellent Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In (which I somehow still haven't gotten around to seeing) has been tapped by Working Title to direct their new feature film adaptation of John Le Carré's Smiley masterpiece Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. As previously reported, the film was written by Peter Morgan, the very talented Frost/Nixon screenwriter who was recently chosen to co-write the next James Bond movie as well. Morgan and Le Carré are both executive producing. This is shaping up to be one of the most promising spy movies on the horizon, even despite the fact that the novel has already been filmed pretty much to perfection as a TV miniseries in 1979. The only major question that still remains is who will step into Alec Guinness's shoes and take on the role of George Smiley? My vote is still for Jim Broadbent.
Let the Right One In, meanwhile, is being developed as an English-language remake by the newly-revived Hammer Films, which will make it the famed studio's first theatrical vampire movie since Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires in the mid-Seventies.
